Before the start of the battle at Kurukṣetra, Arjuna lays down his weapons in despair at the prospect of fighting and killing his kin and his revered elders, and Kṛṣṇa preaches the Bhagavadgītā to him. The fighting then begins and continues for nine bloody days; on the tenth day Arjuna succeeds in killing Bhīṣma. The later, however, defers the day of his actual death, and remains lying on a bed of arrows throughout the rest of the battle.
Sandstone carving of Bhīṣma (an old warrior lay worshiping God in a non-ground form because there is an arrow on it. Bhīṣma lived 58 more days from this event until the Kurukshetra war had ended and gave his sons a "manure" and then died) on the wall along the crooked balcony South West Wing of Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia, taken on October 20, 2018.
