The Pāṇḍavas know well that Duryodhana is unlikely to return their half of the kingdom to them. As war between the two sets of cousins comes to seem inevitable, Kṛṣṇa, Vṛṣṇi prince and incarnation of the great god Viṣṇu, announces that he will put his fighting men at Duryodhana’s disposal, but that he will act as Arjuna’s charioteer. Various ambassadors shuttle between the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas, and multiple consultations take place. Still, Duryodhana is adamant that he will not return a single foot of land to his enemies. Karṇa, who has fallen out with Bhīṣma, vows not to fight as long as Bhīṣma lives; Kṛṣṇa attempts to persuade him to switch to the Pāṇḍava side, but he refuses. Duryodhana appoints Bhīṣma as his commander; Yudhiṣṭhira likewise appoints Draupadī’s brother Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
