Vat Phou Champasak UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vat Phou the Temple of the Moutain, is situated in southern Laos on the banks of the Mekong River, about one hundred kilometers North of the present Cambodian border.
Laos is incredibly proud of this site, but its value goes far beyond the modern-day borders of Laos, and it truly belongs to the common historical heritage of all peoples in the region. As a result, Vat Phgou was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2001.
Research has shown that Vat Phou was a crucial location in the emergence of the region's ancient kingdoms. An important city, once the capital of the ancient Khmer Kingdom long before Angkor was founded, flourished on the banks of the Mekong during the 5th century A.D. And yet many vestiges are only visible today by observing specific details familiar to archaeologists.
The giant Vat Phou complex was primarily built on the slopes of a mountain considered sacred and dominated the valley. However, the remains of the buildings still visible today mostly date from the 11th and 12th centuries A.D.
