The enormous temple-mountain (to the NW of the Bayon) was the state temple of Yasodhrapura of King Udayadityavrman II, and still sufficiently impressive (or recently restored) at the end of the 13th century to merit this description by the Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan: "North of the Golden Tower [Bayon] at a distance of about two hundred yards, rises the Tower of Bronze, higher even than the Golden Tower: a truly astonishing spectacle, with more than ten chambers at its base."  Its present ruined condition obscures its former importance: it is now in the process of being restored, but the problems are severe. The restoration is meant to be finished by 2002 but it may well take longer. During this time parts of the temple may be closed for work. For now, its chief interest is in its bas-relief panels.
