Harivamsha, or the Book of Krishna (or Kṛṣṇa), is an appendix to the Mahābhārata. It recounts the tale of Kṛṣṇa's birth, his childhood escapades with his elder brother, Balarāma, and encounters with his arch-nemesis, Kansa (or Kaṁsa). The Harivamsha is divided into three sections or Sub-Parvas - Harivamsha Parva, Vishnu Parva, and Bhavishya Parva. The first Sub-Parva describes events that precede the birth of Kṛṣṇa; the second is an account of his life, and the third speaks of the Kali-yuga. Just like the Mahābhārata, this epilogue is narrated by Sage Vaishampayana to King Janamejaya. The Harivamsha has 3 Sub-Parvas, 118 chapters, 5,965 shlokas, or couplets.
